INTRODUCTION
Each make of car has its own reputation for reliability, and each has its challenges. On average, none are better or worse than the other, but specific problems can be identified. Does it mean if one model has a problem, all the cars the manufacturer makes are bad?
Alternatively, if one model is excellent, does that mean all that manufacturer’s cars are excellent?
The answer is “No.” For example, Honda led the pack last year in terms of recalls, and Toyota was not far behind. Even Tesla and most of the other American-made and Asian cars had recalls.
Basing a car-buying decision on the perception of which is better may get you in a lot of trouble – buying an expensive car with high km and breaks that cost a fortune to maintain and repair. Following is a summary of what we at Discount Motor City Ltd., Surrey, BC, believe is important to help our customers explore.
SOME OF THE PROBLEMS
To provide a flavour for the above, we summarize several makes and models that have had problems. At Discount Motor City Ltd., we are intimately knowledgeable and do all we can to help our customers make the best decision considering all the issues.
But first, a flavour of some of the Problems
Ford
Ford Fiesta & Focus (2011-2016): These models had dual-clutch transmission (PowerShift) issues, which often led to harsh shifting, slipping gears, and transmission failures.
Ford Explorer (2011-2013): The Explorer experienced transmission shifting issues, including hard shifts and a delay in engagement.
Chevrolet
Chevrolet Malibu (2004-2012): Owners reported slipping transmissions and erratic shifting issues.
Chevrolet Traverse (2009-2012) - Many complaints were made about transmission malfunctions, including hard shifting and premature transmission wear.
Nissan
Nissan Altima (2013-2015) - (CVT Issues) The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in these models led to complaints about shuddering, hesitating, and premature failure. Many owners have reported having to replace the CVT well before expected.
Nissan Pathfinder (2013-2014)—(CVT Problems): Similar to the Altima, the Pathfinder was known for transmission shuddering and acceleration issues. This model also received complaints regarding overheating.
Hyundai
Hyundai Sonata (2011-2014): Some owners described issues with delayed shifting and hesitation when accelerating.
Hyundai Elantra (2011-2013): Owners reported rough shifting or slipping gears, which led to transmission performance and reliability concerns.
Comparison to Toyota and Honda
Toyota and Honda also have transmission issues similar to the above. However, for some reason, they are generally seen as better cars than American and Asian models even though other manufacturers may offer much lower km for a similar price, be more technologically advanced, and offer more options that will benefit you.
Toyota and Honda primarily use the same transmission type, so a problem with one will usually affect them all. American manufacturers such as Ford and Chevrolet have had transmission problems mainly using another type of system. The point is that it does not matter which manufacturer; they all have had and will potentially continue to have problems.
